In a statement, the Design Indaba Expo's organisers said the event generated R191.9-million last year and that an even higher amount was expected in 2010.

"In 2009 alone, the business impact of the Design Indaba was estimated to be R191.9-million, according to an external economic assessment conducted by the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business," they said.

Business orders from exhibitors at the expo raised of R113.1m.

"Exhibitions and conventions generally generate large turnover through the organisers' setup and the delegates' accommodation, travel, meals, souvenirs and consumer durables," the organisers
said.

Exhibitors Craft Outfits, African Allsorts, Design Afrika and The Library, which exhibited at the 2009 exhibition, all reported orders in excess of R100,000 last year.
The expo, which will run from Friday to Sunday, is being held at  the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Some 30,000 visitors  and 350 buyers are expected to attend.

United States media businesswoman Martha Stewart, who served five months in prison in 2004 for lying to investigators about a stock sale, will host a breakfast at the indaba on Saturday.
