Captain Ernest Sigobe said the intent was to reduce contact crimes and crime in general in Eastern Cape cities and rural areas.
Arrests were made in connection with crimes ranging from dealing in dagga, housebreaking, possession of stolen goods or property, theft of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, robbery with aggravating circumstances, to rape and murder.
Police focused on the areas of Port Elizabeth, Mdantsane, Alice, Mthatha, Humansdorp, Cofimvaba, Port Alfred, Mqanduli, Uitenhage, Grahamstown, Butterworth, East London, Mount Frere and Peddie.
Sigobe said most of those arrested would appear in magistrate's courts on Tuesday, while some would go to court at a later stage.
Police said they also confiscated a number of suspected stolen household appliances including DVDs, laptop computers and televisions, and drugs such as dagga and cocaine.
