Joburg police arrest 282 people at weekend

Monday, 17 August 2009
Johannesburg police arrested 282 people in several crime operations at the weekend, a spokesman said on Monday.

Captain John Maluleke said those arrested face charges ranging from robbery, shoplifting, assault, rape, arson, domestic violence, possession of suspected stolen properties and drunken driving.

"Two hundred and eighty two suspects were arrested by JHB Central SAPS members for various offences during crime combating operations from Friday, the 14th of August 2009, [to] this morning, the 17th of August 2009," said Maluleke.

Most of the arrests were made in Johannesburg's central business district (CBD).

"Most of the suspects are appearing in Johannesburg Magistrate's Court today [Monday]," said Maluleke.

Two arrests have been made in connection with a robbery at the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

"We hope to arrest more individuals and detectives are now looking at their possible involvement in other cash heists," said provincial commissioner Perumal Naidoo at a press briefing on Saturday.

The trade route robbery in which two cash in transit guards were shot, was the most recent in a spate of robberies in Gauteng shopping malls.

Seven shopping malls in the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas have been struck.

The two were arrested on Friday morning in Soweto.
