North West robbery syndicate busted

Friday, 22 January 2010
Eleven people, including two police officers, were arrested for being involved in a spate of bank and business robberies in Ventersdorp, Orkney, Christiana and Wolmaransstad, the North West department of public safety said on Friday.

"Eleven suspects including two senior policemen stationed at Wolmaransstad Police Station were arrested by the North West Provincial Organised Crime Task team," spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele said.

"The captain and inspector are alleged to have escorted members of the syndicate to and from targeted banks and businesses.

"In the event that alarms went off during break-ins, they would be nearby to mislead whoever responds to the alarm into believing that it was a false alarm."

The suspects, most of whom are from Klerksdorp, are linked to 15 bank and business break-ins and robberies.

North West MEC for public safety, Howard Yawa commended the task team for the breakthrough in the investigation.

Three vehicles, a BMW X5,Golf 3 and Audi A4, 317 cellphones valued at over R150,000, and an undisclosed amount of cash were confiscated during the arrest.
