New campaign to Protect Future of African girls

Tuesday, 08 January 2008
Proctor & Gamble (P&G) FemCare have teamed up with HERO, a United Nations Association-USA campaign, to create Protecting Futures. The programme is aimed at providing school-based support and feminine hygiene products to girls in Southern Africa.

The Protecting Futures programme will provide products and services to girls in schools as well as help foster the overall health and well-being of every child in the targeted school communities. It is a common occurrence that the schooling of girls in sub-Saharan Africa is compromised by the lack of basic sanitary protection and other feminine hygiene related resources and information.

"There are lots of reasons kids miss school. Being a girl shouldn't be one of them," says Michelle Vaeth, Protecting Futures Program Director for P&G.

P&G will join forces with HERO in schools in the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa as well as schools in Namibia where Protecting Futures will provide sanitary protection to young girls.

These girls will also benefit from a P&G funded health, hygiene and puberty education programme taught by a travelling health educator. In addition, Protecting Futures will fund a travelling health care provider for all of the children at these schools.

"Protecting Futures is making a positive and direct impact in the lives of children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in sub-Saharan Africa,” UNA-USA’s Gabrielle Armand said. “This programme also helps support two of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals - promoting gender equity and ensuring that all boys and girls complete a full course of schooling."
