Afridoctor wins Nokia application contest

Tuesday, 08 December 2009
A mobile phone application that's been called Africa's first mobile health clinic walked away with the honours and more than R600 000 in prize money in the Nokia Africa Calling all Innovators competition.

Afridoctor was developed by 20Fourlabs, the innovation and applications division of Cape Town-based 24.com.

The competition was launched in July this year and called on developers to generate mobile applications and solutions relevant to South African and African consumers.

The top 10 applications were chosen from more than 125 submissions, mostly from Africa. Most submissions came from South Africa, with the second highest number of entries from Kenya. According to Nokia, this shows that Africa is on the map and has a role to play in the future of technology.

According to 20Fourlabs, Afridoctor turns a phone into a powerful first aid and information kit, a doctor-location service and an emergency distress notifier.

The application has a "SnapDiagnosis" system, which allows users to submit photos of their ailments and remotely receive advice from a panel of professionals. It also has a mapping feature that helps users locate doctors, clinics and other health services in their area.

The application also includes an emergency feature that notifies next of kin of the user's distress and location. Other features offered are symptom checkers, first-aid information, health calculators and quizzes, making health-care affordable and accessible to the people of Africa.

Afridoctor, is already available on Nokia's Ovi store, and according to Nokia the response has been very positive.
