University campuses geared for 2010 tourists

Four campuses across South Africa, UJ, Wits, UCT and UKZN, are gearing up to host thousands of tourists during the month of June for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.   Plans have been underway for the last three years across the country, where the university campuses of Johannesburg, Witwatersrand, Cape Town and KwaZulu Natal have undergone extensive infrastructure upgrades for what is hoped will make ideal World Cup bases for large groups of tourists.   “It will be a fun-filled World Cup experience that is ideal for groups,” says Mark Hinton, who came up with the accommodation idea.

SA’s first hospital playground for chronically ill children

The Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg today became the first in South Africa to have its own school playground. Funded by Medscheme, it is hoped that the playground will bring some normality to the lives of chronically and terminally ill children. The playground was specially planned and built to avoid sharp surfaces, metal corners or pipes to take into account the physical frailties of children susceptible to cuts, bruises or more severe injuries. “A panel of medical staff and specialists in designing play areas contributed ideas and the result has been what is probably South Africa’s most expensive – but safest play area,” said Andre Meyer, CEO of Medscheme.

Despite Britain’s disapproval of President Zuma’s polymagous ways, Africa’s man of the moment seems to have quietened his British media critics during his three day visit to South Africa’s closest European ally. The president can be seen in photographs of his visit, totally at ease signing autographs with scholars, smiling broadly while presenting Queen Elizabeth with a handcrafted South African chess set, and charming photographers with his grin outside the state banquet at Buckingham Palace held on Wednesday evening. There are few photographs of the president not smiling. While President Zuma engaged with Britain’s most important people, the wife that accompanied him, Thobeka Madiba-Zuma was at ease in her chic outfits and at one point shared a coach with Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.
