A shipment of 380 left-hand drive units set off from the East London manufacturing plant on Thursday, destined for Baltimore, Jacksonville and Long Beach, USA. This forms part of DaimlerChrysler SA’s seven year contract to produce the model series for the US market.

According to the Daily Dispatch, the East London plant will export 70% of its production to the US’s left-hand drive market, with a shipment leaving East London, every two weeks. The remaining 30& of the plant’s production will service South African consumers.

Joachim Follmann, DaimlerChrysler SA board member says that the opportunity will “provide economic growth opportunities in the East London/Buffalo City region for suppliers and component manufactures, as well as related and peripheral industries alike."

Echoing Follman’s words, Buffalo City municipal spokesperson Darby Gounden was quoted in the Daily Dispatch as saying, “The mere fact that we are exporting internationally means that we are now on the international map. However, the manufacturing of the C-class gives us in the region an opportunity to improve confidence and our image in world markets.”
