University of Cape Town placed 14th in largest-ever BRICS ranking

QS’s annual ranking now ranks 250 top BRICS universities

Each year, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts and compilers of the QS World University Rankings.  This year’s expanded ranking is released today. It now measures performance of the top 250 universities in five nations that exert significant regional influence, and that cumulatively account for 42% of the world’s population.

The University of Cape Town competes with the best universities from the other BRICS nations. It ranks 14th, in the same position as last year. In total, 11 of the 14 South African universities analysed by QS are included among the top 250. All of the top five positions are filled by a Chinese university. The results also show:

The University of the Witwatersrand rises from 28th to 26th. This rise is caused mainly by improvements to its reputation among employers, its relative improvement in hiring PhD-qualified staff, and its performance in QS’s research metrics;

Three South African universities move up the tables. The other two are the University of Johannesburg (67th to 66th) and Rhodes University (79th to 75th);

Rhodes University improves its score in 4 of QS’s 8 indicators, including large improvements for employer reputation and research indicators;

Rhodes University is also South Africa’s most productive research university this year, relative to other BRICS universities. It scores 95.5 for papers per faculty. This is a measure of a university’s research output;

Research output is the strongest aspect of South Africa’s university performance in this year’s BRICS ranking. Nine of South Africa’s 11 universities improve their scores for Papers Per Faculty, while three of the best 40 universities among the BRICS ranking for this metric are South African;

South African universities lag behind those in other BRICS nations in hiring staff with PhDs and in its faculty-student ratios. No South African university is among the top 100 for either of these metrics;

QS evaluated 420 universities from the five nations for this year’s ranking.
